I am presenting "Ten Things to Be a Champion", with the permission
of its creator Warren L. Applegate. Some of these items are not essential for youth wrestlers, but I thought they should
be given the ideas.
1. Be academically eligible - you cannot wrestle
if you cannot make the grade.
2. You have to be strong enough not to be
overpowered by any opponent.
3. You have to be in as good or better condition
than any opponent.
4. You must have a great degree of mental
toughness.
Explain to kids the first four things don't include a wrestling skill, but if you don't have these,
no matter how skilled a wrestler you are you will not
be a champion in high school or college.
5. Superior leg attack defense.
6. Superior defense/offense on bottom.
7. Superior leg attack offense.
8. Breakdown and Ride.
9. Master a Pinning Combination Series.
10. Learn a five point move from the neutral and
bottom positions. Master them, but don't
rely on them.

An athlete's world is physical;
A competitor's world is mental.
The following is an excerpt from the article "Wetting Your Whistle",
by Tom Blair.
When drinking during exercise or competition, there are a few things to keep in mind.
Anything mixed in with the water makes it more difficult to absorb in your body. (Especially carbonated soft drinks)
The best thing is pure cool water. The cooler water helps to prevent the thermal effects of exercise as well as the
emptying feeling in your stomach. To avoid gas buildup (which can cause stomach cramps and side cramps) you should sip
your drink and not gulp it.
Also because your immune system is compromised after long periods of exercise or competition
you should not share your water bottle with others. You should also wash your water bottle after every practice or meet
to avoid getting bacteria build up on them.
After exercise or competition your liver and kidney are stressed out trying to filter out the
multiple metabolic by products like lactic acid. The best fluid again is of course water. You should first drink
water before you start thinking about fueling back up with carbohydrates. It is worth noting that immediately after
exercise or competition your body is ready to absorb the nutrients that it has depleted. Fluid and glycogen reloading
is most optimal during the first 1-3 hours follwoing exercise or competition. This I hope will help you understand the
importance of drinking water as a fluid replacement for your body. Just a reminder that the water does not have to be
ice cold, just that it should be plain pure cool water and to change an old saying "Water does a body good!"
Just a few tips concerning the prevention of skin diseases. Make
sure your wrestlers are showering after each practice and competition.
Most skin conditions are a type of fungus developed as a result of athletes not cleaning properly after activities.
PLEASE DO NOT allow them to come home and finish homework, watch TV, and/or go to bed before they shower properly. Make
sure they are using an Anti-bacterial soap and a shampoo like Selsom Blue.
Another suggestion is to make sure your wrestlers are wearing clean shorts, t-shirts, kneepads,
and headgear. Clean clothes should be worn to practice and/or competition.
One final thought. Ensure that they use a washcloth or something to lather the soap
with instead of using a bar of soap and their hands. The washcloth will remove dead skin, which encourages the growth
of ringworm and other rashes. Also, using a moisturizer to keep their skin from drying out is recommended.
